Simplify your life: Your closet

2015 is almost here and I would like to start the new year a little differently. In the past two months I felt rushed, pressured, overwhelmed and dissatisfied by my everyday life. It was a paradox feeling, I was being overwhelmed by events and activities, yet empty and unhappy. I realized I need to change something and I decided to simplify my life. I believe with a clean and organized home comes a clean and organized life and to simplify my home, simplify my closet, my meal and financial planning and my free time I will feel more content and happy with my life. So I started with the most logical place, my closet. And let me tell you I already feel much better.
I separated my clothes into two categories, hanging and folded. Hanging clothes are all cardigans, pants, blouses and dresses. Folded are all tank tops, sweaters, scarves and jeans. I have four shelves in my walk in closet, so I organized my clothes by the way I will put them on in the morning. Tank tops on top, sweaters in the middle and pants on the bottom. In the morning, I will simply pick a blouse, sweater, necklace and pants and voila! Easy-peasy outfit. I generally don't wear skirts and dresses much as I bike to work so I put them to the end of the closet not to distract me in the morning. I used to have them with my other clothes in the front and let me tell you, they were very distracting!
I am a very visual person and love to organize things by color. Blouses are my go-to basics so they deserve to hang at the very front of my closet. I organized them by color so it's easier to see what I have and what should I wear.

Here is how my closet looks like after simplifying it. Winter clothes are in the front, with blouses, sweaters and pants, while summer clothes rest in the back. I am not tempted to grab a summer dress and "make it work" with dark tights and boots, I am not distracted by the bright summer colors that would feel out of place in the end of December, and my closet looks less cluttered and more organized. When spring comes I will simply swap sides!
Last but not least, here is my jewelry. I use two organizers, an actual jewelry tree for my necklaces and a wine rack for my bracelets. They are nested on my very top shelf even though those are the accessories I pick the last... but if they were at the bottom, my cat would have a feast on my baubles!

Here are some tips on how to simplify your closet:

TIP 1: Separate your clothes into two piles, for folding and for hanging. Chances are, you are more likely to wear something that is not wrinkled and creased, so simplify your life with this easy first step.

TIP 2: Evaluate what you wear on everyday basis and what is for special occasions only. Move the items you wear a lot to the front of the closet and whatever you don't wear as much (sweaters in Florida, shorts in Anchorage) to the back of your closet so they won't distract you when making a decision what to wear.

TIP 3: Divide your wardrobe into two sections, weather appropriate and not weather appropriate. Stick the not weather appropriate items in the back, again, to simplify your choice in the morning, and swap when the seasons change.

TIP 4: Organize your clothes by color. Not only it makes it easier to pick from in the morning, it also lets you know what color you prefer and what color is lacking in your closet.

Dress for less: A Blanket Scarf

Dress for Less: Blanket ScarfOne of THE items this fall is the coveted ZARA Blanket Scarf. Who didn't get it last year is for sure getting it this year, or at least one of the many versions popping up all over internet. Are you on the market to get this scarf? Because I know I am! Here is several different blanket scarves that would make a great buy this month - or a great gift for someone next month!

ZARA

The original one from fall 2013 is long gone. You can buy it on eBay for about $70 - if you are lucky. The bids are getting higher by the minute, because the scarf was truly iconic with its colors and shape. They sell a 2014 version of the scarf for about half the price, but with about half the cuteness as well.

Nasty Gal

Close second to the ZARA cutie is Nasty Gal and their Fall Back Scarf... which is sadly out of stock. You can sign up for their waiting list, or move on. I moved on, onto...

ASOS

Isn't this scarf from ASOS simply gorgeous? I love the dark burgundy and sapphire combined with just a hint of yellow and blue. The ASOS Oversized Black Check Square Scarf can be yours for only $34.11. Not bad, considering the shipping is free both ways!

Amazon

Since I'm always on the hunt for the best deal, and no way I would pay over $30 for a scarf, I dug deeper to find the coveted blanket scarf for less. This one looks almost like the original ZARA one and looks awfully comfy and cozy! Get the Mixeshop Large Red Camel Navy Green Plaid Checked Tartan Scarf Wrap Shawl on Amazon for only $18.47 with free shipping. Woot woot!

Happy November! The most wonderful time of the year is almost here and nobody has time to think about clothes, because everybody is busy thinking about shopping and cooking and baking and... At least I am. That's why I decided to revive the Redhead of the Week column to boost some color inspiration in our busy lives. And who is a better inspiration than the most famous redhead on a TV show ever? I swear, Miranda Hobbes haven't worn a color that would not suit her. Take a look:

Hello November!

October was insanely busy. I worked at two local festivals, organized a fashion photo shoot, had a visit from my sister who lives in Europe, got sick, published the photo shoot, said goodbye to my sister, started planning my own trip to Europe... and much much more. I am so happy that November is here, because I finally get to relax with my family and shop, cook and bake for the holidays.

I did something new with my hair // Excited to wear fall colors!

Happy National Cat Day!

My hair is getting long and I didn't have time to color it in weeks.

Wear all the colors!

Peachy Keen

I love going to thrift stores because I can't stand the idea of people wearing the same clothes than I do, or even worse, me wearing something that someone else is wearing! That's why I don't hesitate to hit clearance racks, often populated with last of the last pieces that I am sure whoever bought them when they were full price is not wearing them anymore. Such was the case of this dress. I mean, who is shopping for peach lace dresses in September? Well, this girl!
From all the places I found it at Walmart. It was hanging there on the clearance rack tucked neatly between rows of polo shirts, workout pants and cropped jeans. It was the only one there, I didn't see any other dresses or this one in particular, and it was my size, surprise surprise!
For a work picnic I paired it with golden sandals and golden jewelry with pink and orange accents.

Dress: Walmart (this one in peach color, similar HERE or HERE) // Sandals: Target // Necklace and earrings: Kohl's

Let's get sporty

I do not work out. At all. Everybody that knows me knows this, I'm the least likely person to go to the gym or participate in any kind of activity. Plus, everything I know about sports I know from People and Daily Mail, so unless a sports player has a famous wife, chances are I've never heard about him.
I tried to change this so many times. Going to the gym, going running, playing tennis, swimming. I am just not motivated enough to stick to an exercise routine.
Last year I followed a lot of fitness accounts on Instagram and I tried the 30 Day Shred by Jillian Michaels. I worked out for 30 minutes at home, then I walked to the gym at our apartment complex and I did 30 minutes on a treadmill. I didn't lose a single pound and even though I could see my arms were getting stronger, not one of my "problem areas" was getting smaller or more muscular. So after 30 days I wrapped up my efforts and that was it.
I am ready to try again and I'm hoping that Victoria's Secret and their cute workout clothes will be the key. I read a great motivation tip - put on your gym clothes and then decide if you want to go to the gym or not. Today I received in mail a Victoria's Secret sports bra and leggings and that's the push I needed. They are cute and comfortable, plus they are real workout clothes, not the casual leggings and oversized shirt I used to wear before. It's the perfect push - new, fancy sports gear that NEEDS to be tried in action - that I was looking for.

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes.

Dress for less: Leopard Sneakers

Dress for less

Fall is coming this month, but you can't really feel it in Central California. We had a hot summer and this month is no exception, so cozy sweaters, tall boots and warm coffee will have to wait for another two months or so. One of the biggest challenges is to find transitional items that will work in the hot temperatures but satisfy the craving for fall items that are all over magazines and Instagram. Such item are leopard sneakers, equally wearable in summer with shorts or dresses and cute with jeans when the weather finally changes in October.

If you crave luxury, Givenchy has a pair for you - for cool $900. The slip-ons are made from calf hair and leather piping at collar with leather lining. They are made in Italy and the quality of material is incredible, but for a trendy pair of shoes I would definitely not spend $875.

That brings me to Sam Edelman. Also made from calf hair with leather piping, they have more affordable price - only $79.90! You can get them at Nordstrom.
Unfortunately, the closest Nordstrom to me is about an hour away which makes it pretty impossible to take a shopping trip for one pair of shoes.

Let's talk about local options. BONGO from Kmart are the cheapest - would you believe they are under $10? Yeah, me neither. I definitely have to try them on. I am pleasantly surprised with the quality of Kmart clothing recently so I am really interested to see how they feel.

Payless Shoes has these leopard slip-ons, with the texture almost like calf-hair. For under     $20, I think they are a smart buy this season. Plus, it's BOGO at Payless.com. Buy One Get One Half Off, plus, get FREE shipping on any purchase over $35! Valid through 9.22.2014.

Finally, I actually tried these Target shoes on in a different pattern, because they didn't    have my size in leopard, and I didn't like the fit. They kinda curve upwards and I felt        they make my feet look huge.

Which ones do you like the most? Which ones are you most likely to buy?
